~~~About My Character~~~
What is your character's history? Are they on the side of the Friends, the High Council, neutral, or are they unaware of the conflict? What has happened to them in their lives to make them the way they are today?
Arthur Pendragon was born in 710 A.D in the Castle Tintagel off the coast of Cornwall. His father was the High King Uther of Briton and his mother, the Queen Igraine. (Formally the Duchess of Cornwall.)
When Arthur was barely three years, tragedy struck when Uther was mortally wounded and passed on. Leaving his grieving wife and young child at the mercy of the power-lusting warlords and knights, eager to claim the throne as their own and dispose of Uther's only son.
The sorcerer Merlin Ambrosius, (who had been responsible for the creation of Arthur, by seeing that Igraine's first husband, Glorlois, was kept on the battlefield while Uther snuck into the Tintagel castle.) silently slipped into the great hall of Caer Camelot, where the greedy nobility were standing around Uther's laid-out corpse.
Quietly blending amongst the crowds, the Wizard whispered softly, pointing his wand and casting a spell upon Uther's glittering, golden hilted sword, (resting in the arms of the dead king.)
Merlin slowly uttered the words:
"To Londinium with you, tempered steel
fly through the air with great zeal.
Arrive at your destination and into an anvil in the churchyard yourself set.
Below the hilt of Uther's sword, shall my words carve to this affect:
"Who so Pulleth Out This Sword of this Stone and Anvil, is Rightwise King Born of England.' "
fly through the air with great zeal.
Arrive at your destination and into an anvil in the churchyard yourself set.
Below the hilt of Uther's sword, shall my words carve to this affect:
"Who so Pulleth Out This Sword of this Stone and Anvil, is Rightwise King Born of England.' "
In a burst of light, the sword shook itself from the cold hands of it's late-wielder and shot off into the air and out the window; leaving a trail of stars, and dizzy nobles who attempted to grab it.
Merlin tapped his staff for attention, and the court turned on him. "I have sent Uther's sword to Londinium. You will find it in the churchyard embedded in an anvil stone. You will know it by sight, if any of you wish to claim the Kingship, you must pull Uther's sword from the stone."
As the courtiers muttered amongst themselves, and greedy warlords and other nobles started to make plans to speed with all haste to Londinium, Merlin's ancient eyes sort out Igraine.
Taking the Queen aside into a private chamber, the aging wizard promised Queen Igraine that he would take Arthur to Sir Ector and his wife, to be raised as their foster child. The distraught, widowed Igraine had no choice, but to let her son be hidden away, until he could claim the throne.
Taking upon the guise of one of the castle servants, Merlin snuck out of the castle-fortress and used his magic to speed himself and Arthur to Sir Ector's keep.
When brought into the crumbling castle, the weak Lady Fulvia and the Sir Ector greet him in the main audience chamber. Merlin innocently inquires why Sir Ector wasn't at Uther's court; and the red-haired temperamental knight shoots back that he was suffering a cold.
Merlin explained who the sleeping Arthur is and asking Ector to care for and foster the Prince. Kindly Lady Fulvia eagerly gathers up the fair child in her arms and protectively sweeps out of the audience chamber with the rightful King of Briton.
Ector promises the disguised Merlin to take care of the boy, and Merlin takes his leave, in his forgetfulness he doesn't threaten Ector that he must take good care of Arthur.
Nearly ten years pass and Briton has fallen into an age of waring factions and vicious cruelty, Lady Fulvia had passed away eight years prior, and Arthur has grown into a skinny, curious youth.
Ector, forgetting his vow to care for Arthur, has given the rightful heir to the throne of Briton, the derogatory nickname of: "Wart." And forces his fosterling into kitchen duties as a page.
Occasionally, Wart would be allowed to accompany his foster brother, Kay, out hunting. Provided, the grumpy Kay would insist, that Wart kept out of his way and didn't do anything stupid.
On one of the trips, Wart goes in search of Kay's arrow that missed it the deer his foster brother was aiming at. Locating the arrow, (and unknowingly being stalked by a skinny wolf,) Wart falls through the thatched roof of a odd cottage and lands with a thump on a wooden chair, in front of a table set for tea and opposite a long, white-bearded figure. The old man immediately announces that Wart did finally drop in after all, but is a bit late.
Wart is unknowingly face to face with the man responsible for saving his life, for the first time in nearly a decade; and so begins a new chapter in the skinny Prince's life, as Merlin self-appoints himself "The Wart's" Tutor. (Annoyed with the fact the youth has only been taught the subjects of battle, combat, horsemanship and warfare in order to be a squire.)
Forcing Ector's hospitality (but being duped by the wily old knight,) Merlin takes up residence with his owl Archimedes in the crumbling north tower. It's from here that the sorcerer begins his teaching of the Wart.
Wart is eager to learn and very polite to the old sorcerer, despite the fact that Merlin is incorrigible in his manner, determined that the young Prince doesn't become all brawn and no brain.
The old Wizard constantly brings up,the need for, (and often casts spells for,) Wart to learn wisdom and leadership, by transmogrifying the boy, and sometimes himself, into various wildlife. (Fish, squirrels...and a sparrow soon after Merlin orders Archimedes to tutor him. Which ends up in a bad encounter with Madame Mim.)
Wart is also confused by the strange subjects about the future, that Merlin insists on going into great detail about. But Wart is a devoted student, finding himself drawn to the kind Magus, who treats the boy as anything but a kitchen-servant.
The young Prince is eager to attend a tournament in Londinium on New Years Day, the winner of which that year would be crowned King of England. Kay doesn't want his foster brother as a squire, but Sir Ector insists.
But Wart's position is given away to another servant, Hogs, when he talks back to Sir Ector in defense of Merlin. However, Kay's (Sir Kay's,) new squire is struck down by mumps, and Ector recruits Wart back as his son's squire.
Eagerly rushing to Merlin to tell him the good news, Wart is started to be greeted very coldly by his tutor. Who then proceeds to rant that he thought Wart had brains, and would amount to something, instead of being a stooge for his lunk-headed foster brother.
Wart defends himself, saying that he's lucky to be Kay's squire.
A frustrated Merlin lets out an angry howl and pulls down his hat, uttering: "Blow me to Bermuda!" Before shooting straight out of the thatched roof of the North Tower, like a rocket, in a shower of stars.
A instantly saddened Wart asks Archimedes where Merlin has gone, the owl admits the old wizard had gone off to an island that hasn't been discovered yet and may not ever return.
Archimedes accompanies Wart, who travels with Sir Ector and Sir Kay as his squire, to Londinium and book into an inn. When they arrive at the tournament the next day, Wart realizes he's forgotten Kay's sword and reveals this to his foster brother, who proceeds to chase the skinny youth past the pavilions, ordering Wart to get it.
Arriving at the inn to find it locked up, Wart notices something shinning in the opposing churchyard. Upon looking closer, the boy realised that it was a sword, sheathed into an anvil set on a stone.
Ignoring Archimedes pleas, Wart hopped over the low iron fence and rushed towards the embedded sword. Reaching over to pull it out, a soft hum and a glowing light surrounded him and Wart pulled back. Archimedes again hooted his disapproval, but Wart insisted that Kay needed a sword and bravely pulled the blade from the anvil.
Hurrying back to the tournament, Wart offered the sword to Kay, who complained that it wasn't his sword. Ector grabbed the sword and his eyes widened upon reading the words inscribed below the hilt: "Who so pulleth out this Sword...it's the sword in the stone!"
A tall, dark haired, heavily bearded man nearby grabbed the sword upon hearing Ector's words. "The sword in the stone?" King Lot of Lothian echoed in disbelief; and both Sir Ector and Sir Pellinore confirmed it, so Lot called out to the crowd that the sword had been pulled.
Upon demands from Ector to know how the skinny squire had attained it, Wart innocently admitted he pulled it out from the anvil in the churchyard, to raucous laughter from the surrounding crowd.
Embarrassed, Ector demanded the truth, and poor Wart stood by his word, so Ector grabbed him by the scruff and all but dragged him back to the churchyard to prove it. Following them was the interested crow of spectators, who tailed them; flags, banners, standards and all.
Upon reaching the fenced anvil, Ector let go of Wart and sheathed the sword back into the stone, jovially motioning to Wart to attempt to pull out the sword again.
Sticking his tongue between his teeth, Wart pushed up his sleeves and went to grab the sword's hilt, only to be pushed aside by Kay. Who then attempted to pull the sword, struggling with his father to do so, and then being surrounded by other knights jostling to do the same.
Lot cried out in Wart's defense, and Pellinore also called out that they should: "...let the boy try." Lot agreed and the knights all stepped back from the anvil. Pellinore kindly encouraged Wart to go forward.
Wart looked solemn and strode purposely to the enchanted sword. Placing both hands on the golden hilt, the youth slipped Uther's sword out of the anvil, as easily as if it had been sheathed in satin.
The soft chorus and glittering beams of light shone down once again, and all the people gather stood in humble silence for what they called a miracle. The boy was the true king of England.
"Hail King Arthur! Hail King Arthur!" The cries rang out across the churchyard.
Sir Ector fell to one knee in front of the embarrassed Arthur and begged forgiveness, ordering the confused Kay to do the same.
Soon enough, Arthur was sped away and taken to the Caer Londinium. The boy was draped in a velvet cloak and crowned, then left alone in the throne room, (with Archimedes as his only companion,) as the court prepared his speedy coronation.
Poor Wart(...now called by his true name, Arthur,) tried several times to escape his unwanted role by slipping out the side door, but each time he was blocked by the gathered crowds cheering his name.
Close to tears, Arthur admitted to Archimedes that he: "...wished Merlin was here." And began calling out the old wizard's name.
A swirl of glittering star suddenly swirled about through the air and around a column, before exploding into a familiar figure with a long, white beard. (But much tanner than Arthur remembered, and dressed in strange clothing.)
Merlin had returned and seemed as if he'd recovered from his anger. When Arthur explains what has happened to him.
Merlin merely smiles and admits that of course Arthur is King, one day he'll have knights who sit at a round table, (though he can have a square one if he prefers.)
After a moment or so of confusing conversation, Merlin admits everything to Arthur. That the previous High King, Uther, was his father and his mother Igraine still lived, taking refuge on Avalon with Arthur's half-sister, Morgana Le Fey.
Merlin also explains that Arthur has yet another half-sister, Uther's daughter Morgause, who is married to King Lot of Lothian.
Arthur is delighted to know his mother is alive and that he has siblings, only having the grumpy Kay to grow-up with had been lonely.
Immediately Merlin sends Archimedes to Avalon, sending a message of invitation to Igraine and Morgana.
Soon, Arthur is crowned in Caer Londinium, in presence of all the nobles of Briton and his mother, sisters, and his nephews (Lot and Morgause's two sons, Gawain and Gahris; who are a year and two years, respectfully, younger than Arthur.)
Merlin suggests to Arthur that he immediately sets about rebuilding his father Uther's fortress of Caer Camelot, as it is in a much finer location than Londinium, as it overlooks the summer country.
Arthur, who has taken on Merlin as his most trusted adviser, sets about this task.
The next nine years go by quickly. Arthur grows from a skinny, straw-haired youth into a handsome, tall, broad-chested warrior. He spends his time jointly in battle, (primarily protecting his borders and his people,) and in the final stages of re-building Caer Camelot.
In this time, Arthur had received a great gift from the Lady of the Lake, a magnificent sword, crafted from a metal discovered in a rock that had burned through the sky. This sword was enchanted, this sword was Excalibur.
Arthur has assembled a few trusted knights, but is yet to assemble his might band of round-table knights. His closest knights are his kindred. They are his nephews, Gawain and Gahris; his chamberlain is his foster brother, Kay; and his most beloved friend, his cousin, Lancelot du Luc, (the only son of King Ban of Brittany and Arthur's Aunt, High Priestess Vivianne of Avalon.)
The Queen-mother, Igraine, has retired to an abbey; Morgause has given birth to two more sons, (Agravaine and Gareth,) and beautiful, dark eyed and haired Morgana Le Fay has remained by her half-brother's side; taking care of Arthur in a wife's stead.
Though constantly pursued by the charming, Brittany Prince, Sir Lancelot, the former Priestess of Avalon remains devoted in her task of taking care of Arthur. (Who would go days without eating, while pouring over battle-charts, or preparing for battle, if his fey-like youngest half-sister, did not coax him into eating.)
Merlin has quietly observed these things, and tells Arthur that he is nearly twenty-one and must find a good maid to be his bride. Arthur agrees, and recruits Merlin to set out from the almost complete Caer Camelot and find a comely Princess of a good age.
The old sorcerer didn't have to search long, only traveling as far as the neighboring kingdom of the Summer Country, where the King had a beautiful, fair haired daughter of seventeen years. Merlin knew Arthur would be pleased with the lovely maid, and quickly went to discussions with her father.
Princess Guinevere's dowry would include a huge, ancient, hand-carved rounded table for Arthur's great hall, still in construction in Caer Camelot.
As Merlin predicted, Arthur found the very sight of the shy, devout Guinevere agreeable for a bride, and eagerly agreed to the betrothal. Though it was to be a marriage of convenience, as Arthur didn't know Guinevere at all and felt indifferent. Perhaps love would come later, he reasoned. When we have children.
But Arthur's eldest half-sister, Morgause, had other plans. She longed to be able to put one of her own sons, preferably Gawain, on the throne, should the battle-hungry Arthur fall in battle. An heir would be unthinkable.
Finding out the location of Madame Mim's cottage, the Queen of Lothian struck a bargain with Mim. If Mim would put a curse on Arthur to commit a terrible betrayal with their sister Morgana and so be cursed by Le Fey into never producing a legitimate male heir ; she, in turn, would see to it that Madame Mim could use her influence over the betrayed, powerful former Avalon Priestess, to get revenge on Merlin.
Cackling in delight, the grey haired old witch eagerly agreed and set about casting the spell of lust and betrayal, which she gave to Morgause to poison Arthur and Morgana's wine cups with on the eve of the royal wedding.
On the eve of his wedding day, Arthur, poisoned by the spell, seduced his half-sister and bedded the likewise cursed Morgana.
Awakening in the morning, Arthur awoke to the screams and curses from the lips of his erstwhile-beloved half-sister, who had been both mother and wife to him.
Draped only in a bedding sheet, Morgana pointed a slim finger at Arthur, her face drawn and pale.
"Accursed King," the woman spat. "Foul spawn of demon, for what you have done, that which is most dear to you will die. And that which you most hope for will never come into fruition."
In a burst of light, the fledgling sorceress vanished, leaving Arthur ashamed and weeping.
No-one knew the reason of Arthur's tears on his wedding day. Nine years again past and Guinevere had yet to produce an offspring.
Merlin had disappeared, Morgana, brainwashed in her shattered state by Mim and Morgause, had lured the sorcerer into trap. Morgana mortally wounded Merlin before his apprentices, Balthazar Blake and Veronica Gorloisen, could halt her plans.
Arthur misses his adviser and friend greatly, and never stops in his mourning for Merlin.
In the fifteen years that followed, Lancelot had married and his wife Elaine had given birth to a glorious child, called Galahad, who would recover the Holy Grail.
In the meantime, Arthur had received a great shock. A dark haired, blue eyed knight in dark armor had appeared at Caer Paravel.
The handsome man revealed himself as Mordred, Morgana's son and Arthur's illegitimate child. He vows to defeat Arthur on the battlefield and claim his rightful throne.
Arthur is now forty-five, strong and bold as ever, but still tries to reason with his only child, (Guinevere never producing a child, and now having run off with Lancelot.)
Mordred will have no reasoning, (having been raised by Morgana, Morgause and Madame Mim,) and again throws down his challenge to his father.
Arthur prepares for battle, but knows this much, there is a prophecy that a child born on May Day, as Mordred (who had mockingly informed him so) was, will destroy him and his kingdom.
The Battle of Camlann is fought, and Mordred dies by Arthur's blow, while Arthur is likewise mortally wounded by his son and dies in Gawain's arms.
Arthur is taken on a glorious silver barge, (guarded by Nimue, a sympathetic Morgana and the Lady of the Lake,) to Avalon. (He was admitted there by Oberon, since the fairy King owed Merlin a favor,) and laid to sleep, not rest, within the Hollow Hill in a great mausoleum.
This was in anticipation of Arthur's return, as the prophesied Once and Future King.
Flash forward in time to 1995. Arthur is awakened ahead of schedule by Elisa when the Archmage attacked Avalon in later part of that year. (According to Peredur this was two hundred years ahead of schedule.)
Arthur helped the Avalon Clan and their allies against the Archmage, and personally defeated Macbeth in the following battle. Afterwards, interested in exploring the outside world, the High King left Avalon.
Arthur had an mysterious adventure in the mortal world and then returned to Avalon. He considered living on Avalon, but then decided to leave aboard a skiff.
The skiff that he took arrived in London in May 18, 1996, where he decided to remain vigil in Westminster Abbey. There, after midnight (May 19), he met Griff the Gargoyle, and re-encountered the Stone of Destiny; which told the High King that he must prove himself worthy once again of wielding Excalibur.
The stone transported both Arthur and Griff to New York, to the roof of the Guggenheim Museum. They met Hudson and the Trio, who assisted them in their quest; however, Arthur's desire to find Excalibur also came to Macbeth's attention; and the old Scottish King also decided to quest for the enchanted sword.
The two former kings fought for the magic sword in the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, where it was found in a stone dragon. Arthur retrieved Excalibur at last and forgave Macbeth, accepting him as an ally.
Afterwards, Arthur decided to embark on another quest, to find Merlin. He left with Griff, whom he had knighted in order to accompany him.
Later, with help from Macbeth, Arthur and Griff returned to London and made contact with the London Clan. In 1996, (November,) Arthur and Griff encountered Macbeth, Lexington and Hudson while they were near Westminster Abbey guarding the Stone of Destiny which was about to be shifted to Scotland.
Both Griff and Arthur had not been able to locate Merlin, and Arthur had returned to the London clan at Knight's Spur, to do more research on Merlin and himself. Thus he'd ended up looking after the SoD.
Soon the Stone of Destiny was brought to Peredur fab Ragnal in Castle Carbonek, and it told him of Arthur's re-awakening, so bringing Arthur to the official attention of the Illuminati for the first time. (Arthur and Griff had a series of encounters with Illuminati as they searched for Merlin.)
Arthur's search for Merlin took him to such places as his birthplace of Tintagel; to Stonehenge, and even the South Pole. After he and his companions find Merlin at last in his Crystal Cave and free him, Arthur is determined to embark on a quest for the Holy Grail.
(There is talk that Arthur will perhaps find a "New Camelot" during his quest for Merlin.)
But, in the meantime, Arthur has become separated from Griff and the rest of the Gargoyles in his questing. Stumbling upon a familiar looking old cottage in the woods, the King can hear beautiful singing inside.
Peering through a crack in the wooden door, Arthur can see a beautiful, dark haired woman with her back to him. "Morgana?" He whispers in disbelief.
All of a sudden the singing turns into devious laughter, and the door slams open, making the unsuspecting Arthur tumble inside. Struggling to his feet, the armored King looks up to see the dark hair shimmer away and in it's place...the hideous purple visage of mad Madame Mim.
The witch delightedly puts a curse on Arthur, that at random moments in his travels for Merlin, he will transform away from his noble, warrior self and return to being the skinny youth, Wart.
Arthur's name is often rumored to mean. "Uther's bear." (Art-Uther.)
As a youth, Arthur/Wart is good-natured, curious and polite. Though he has a terrible clumsy streak, as his equilibrium struggles to keep up with his fast growing limbs.
Eager to learn, Arthur quickly takes to Merlin's odd teaching, and though he seems mildly interested in Madam Mim's abilities, stand a staunch defender of his teacher.
When he is offered a squire role with Kay, Arthur is quick to dismiss Merlin in his eagerness to prove himself a future warrior. Though the boy quickly regrets this when Merlin takes off, showing that he realizes his mistakes and shows early signs of humility.
Arthur is frightened when he realised that by accidentally pulling his father's sword from the stone when Kay needed a sword, realizing himself in a "pickle" when he makes himself the rightful king.
Happy when Merlin returns, Arthur starts to realize from Merlin's wise words that he will grow to be a capable king, and starts to accept his new title with new hope.
When he grows to manhood, Arthur becomes a powerful warrior and, under Merlin's tutelage, a great negotiator and battle-strategist.
Passionate about keeping his kingdom united, Arthur will fight tooth and nail to keep his people safe and protected.
Devoted to the fledgling Church and also to his friend Merlin, the High King often finds his loyalty split between his religion and the ways of the ancient sorcerer. But always turns to Merlin in times of crisis.
Stern but kind, Arthur endears himself to nearly all that encounters him, and his followers will lay down their very lives for him.
If your character is listed on one of these pages, please copy their entry here. Will you be playing by this description, or are you going to take a different spin on things, and how so?
Arthur/Wart is only mentioned in passing in the Merlin and Madame Mim sections, and doesn't have an article. But I'm pretty sure people are familiar with the story of Arthur in Disney versions. (Or at least in SitS if not Gargoyles.)
However, I would like to play Arthur in two ways.
As the result of a curse from Madam Mim, I will have him age and de-age at random; perhaps during times it is most unsuitable. i.e changing in age from the wise, warrior High King to the clumsy form of Wart and being forced to adapt and recoup.
~~~Sample~~~
Give us a small sample of how you will play your character. Give us at least three paragraphs.
"Oh, Arthur King, Arthur King," Mim purred, hopping up and down in delight. "What a delight! My, my, you look just the way you do in the movies." She cackled oddly.
Arthur, prone on the ground, twisted his features in remembered terror of the old witch, and lunged for Excalibur; but Madame Mim tutted and waved her finger, freezing the noble King and then circled him.
"Why the last time I saw you, you were an itty-bitty little sparrow," she wagged her pointed finger. "Shall I turn you into a sparrow, again?"
The High King narrowed his blue eyes. "If you do," Arthur responded mildly. "I'll just scratch your nose with my talons and fly right up and out of the chimney."
Madame Mim cackled. "Oh, naughty, naughty. Such a naughty King. How would you like to be twelve again, instead?"
Arthur raised his left eyebrow, definitely not the age I'd like to re-live. "No thank-you."
Mim turned her head right around to look at him upside down. "How about we make a compromise, then? You'll be twelve half of the time. No, no, better yet," she smirked. "At random moments, while you are searching for dear Merlin."
The High King frowned deeply. "Madam, I know you're searching for revenge against Merlin, and also against me for killing Mordred," his throat went dry at the name of his only child. "But I mean you no harm, if you just let me pass through on my way."
Mim tapped her hair-mole on her chin. "Hmm, let me think..." she put her hideous features close to Arthur's, her terrible breath nearly causing Arthur to pass out. "No!"
Arthur narrowed his eyes. "Oh?" He replied simply, having little power to fight back against the sorceress, he shut his blue eyes tightly. "Well, get on with it then! I'm a busy man."
Mim giggled.
"Naughty, naughty King, hear these words I spin.
From your middle-years to your youth you will return,
at random spans of time,
for your friends are enemies of mine."
From your middle-years to your youth you will return,
at random spans of time,
for your friends are enemies of mine."
A spark of purple light circled around Arthur, and he felt his body shiver. At that moment, Mim suddenly seemed to grow a little taller as the king looked at her gleeful features.
Arthur looked down at his skinny legs, encased in slightly too-big tights and blinked his eyes. "Well, Madame, it seemed to have worked." He replied almost jovially, in a youth's breaking voice. "Might I go on my way now?"
~~~Bonding~~~
Why this character? What draws you to them? What makes you want to play them?
Arthur has always been one of my favorite mythical Kings. I feel drawn to him because of the little known about the man himself.
Scholars have debated for years on how good a man Arthur was, if he had many failings, lost in the translated stories across the years, or if he was created from many stories. A conglomeration of various heroes and legends from the dark ages.
I wish to play Arthur in order to help bridge a balance between the two Disney portrayals, (i.e the clumsy, newly-crowned boy-King and the powerful, solemn warrior-King newly awakened from his slumber.) And have the chance to create some new ideas regarding the mythical/historical side of High King Arthur of Briton.
Who else do you play here?
No-one. (Merlin is on reserve.)
